GUNPOWDER

GUNPOWDER

PARTS:

  • Potassium Nitrate (KNO3)
  • Charcoal (C)
  • Sulfur (S)
  • Something to grind the ingredients (ex. coffee grinder)
  • Medium bowl or container
  • Closeable glass or plastic bottle for storage

STEPS:

  1. Mix together a 75:15:10 ratio of KNO3, C, and S, respectively
  2. Put the mixture into the grinder and grind until fine and mixed
  3. Pour ground mixture into storage container
  4. To light, either use a fuse or hold a flame near the powder for a few seconds.

NITROGLYCERIN

NITROGLYCERIN

PARTS:

  • Fuming red nitric acid (HNO3+NO2)
  • Fuming sulfuric acid (3x amount of above) (H2SO4SO3)
  • Syringe of glycerin
  • 75ml beaker)
  • Similarly sized beaker of water
  • Ice bath
  • Thermometer
  • Baking Soda
  • Litmus Paper

STEPS:

  1. Into the 75 ml beaker, pour 13ml of HNO3+NO2
  2. Place the beaker into the ice bath, and allow it to cool to under 20C (68F)
  3. Once cooled, add 39 ml of H2SO4SO3. ⚠Do this carefully and avoid splashing, as these acids are extremely potent⚠
  4. Stir carefully, and once combined cool the mixture with more ice to 10-15C (50-59F)
  5. ⚠SLOWLY⚠ add the glycerin using the syringe until the entire surface of the acid is covered
  6. ⚠CAREFUL!⚠ Nitration begins immediately so the solution MUST BE KEPT UNDER 30C (86F). if the solution does reach a higher temperature, pour it carefully fro the beaker directly into the ice bath to prevent an explosion
  7. For the first ~10 minutes, gently stir the mixture. The nitroglycerin should be forming in a layer on the surface
  8. After around 15-20 minutes when the layer has completely formed, transfer it to the beaker of water. the Nitroglycerin will settle and most of the acid solution can be drained.
  9. Once drained, add the Nitroglycerin to a solution of baking soda and water. This will neutralize the acid and make the nitroglycerin a bit more stable
  10. Repeatedly wash the Nitroglycerin with the baking soda solution, testing with litmus paper until as much acid is removed
  11. take a small drop of nitroglycerin with the syringe and put it on a nonflammable surface. hold a flame to it and it should burn wth a semi clear blue flame
  12. Take the rest of the Nitroglycerin and store it in a small glass storage container
  13. ⚠BE CAREFUL HANDLING NITROGLYCERIN. It is highly sensitive to shock and can explode if not stored carefullys.

MOLOTOV

MOLOTOV

PARTS:

  • Gasoline, acetone, denatured alcohol, etc
  • Oil
  • Old rag
  • beer/soda bottle

STEPS:

  1. Fill the bottle 2/3 full with your flammable liquid of choice
  2. Fill the final 1/3 with oil
  3. soak the rag in gasoline, acetone, denatured alcohol, or any other flammable liquid

COLORED SPARKS

COLORED SPARKS

PARTS:

  • Gunpowder
  • Tape (electrical, duct, gaffers)
  • Your choice of mineral salts (listed below)
  • tinfoil

STEPS:

  1. Choose your mineral salts. here are some options that can also be mixed together for more colors: Strontium nitrate(red), Barium nitrate(green), Copper nitrate(blue), Sodium nitrate(yellow)
  2. Grind down your minerals to a powder about as fine as your gunpowder
  3. Mix the mineral powder with the gunpowder and shake gently to combine
  4. lay out a 3-4 inch wide strip of tinfoil and pour a line of the gunpowder mixture down its length. be sure not to pile it to high (~1/2 in max)
  5. roll ou the tinfoil carefully, and choose a side to crimp more than the other. crimp this side as you roll but not the other
  6. when you are finished rolling, put a fuse into the uncrimped end and lightly crimp it just enough to seal
